Soy Happy News Fall/Winter 2003

This summer, we saw the passage of the Healthy School Lunch resolution in California; increased sales of veggie dogs in Major League Baseball parks; a swelling of interest and queries from prospective vendors all over the country; and interest and coverage of Soy Happy by a variety of media.

The interest in vegetarian alternative fare continues to rise. Every day, we see new studies and statistics indicating this fact. Consequently, we now have nearly 1,000 news and alert subscribers throughout the United States as well as in Canada and other parts of the world. Subscribers comprise of vendors, manufacturers, individual consumers, organizations, media representatives, celebrity endorsers, distributors, school personnel, hospital dieticians...and many more. We receive queries every day, asking for advice or suggestions or referrals. And we can barely keep up with the news that's coming out on the importance of eating more plant-based foods and the viability of the vegetarian alternative market.

The time is indeed ripe for increased exposure, availability and sales of vegetarian alternative foods in mainstream venues.

Update after Passage of ACR16

In June, the "Healthy School Lunch" resolution (ACR16) was passed by California's legislature. This resolution asks all California schools to offer a plant-based lunch option on the daily menu. The follow up to this success continues with CHOICE (Consumers for Healthy Options in Children's Education) and other healthy school lunch advocacy programs getting on board to support the implementation of healthier lunches in addition to creating school gardens and an educational curriculum to complement both. Soy Happy's director Johanna McCloy is an advisor to CHOICE and continues to work closely with school nutritionists and food service representatives, as well as parents and students, supportive organizations, and the media.

The California School Food Service Association is having it’s 51st Annual Conference in April of 2004. The director of CHOICE will be among the speakers at this conference! There will be over 400 exhibitor booths and over 1500 attendees that include directors, supervisors, etc. throughout California. If you are an organization dedicated to healthy school lunches or are in any other way associated with this pursuit, please contact them for more information about getting an exhibit for the event.

More Americans Consume Soy in their Daily Diet

Ease and Taste of Current Soyfoods Considered Major Factors According to A Recent Supermarket Guru Survey

WASHINGTON, DC - October 10, 2003 /PRNewswire/ -- Soyfoods are further emerging into the mainstream as more health-conscious consumers search for foods with nutritional benefits that are convenient and taste great. As evident by a recent, self-selected survey conducted by Supermarket Guru Phil Lempert, an expert analyst on consumer behavior and food trends and editor and contributor to NBC's Today Show, 68 percent of respondents consume soyfoods as a regular part of their diet. The survey, that Lempert states "shows how important healthy eating has become to the U.S. consumer," was conducted through Lempert's Web site, SupermarketGuru.com.

Lempert's survey results show that 73 percent of those consuming soy claim to do so because they are aware that soy delivers health benefits, and nearly 50 percent report that they choose foods containing soy simply because they enjoy the taste. The fact that nearly 50 percent said they choose foods containing soy simply because they enjoy the taste "demonstrates how far food companies have come in developing delicious soy products that are easy to incorporate into the daily diet," said Lempert. Soyfoods are eaten most frequently at breakfast and supper and include soymilk (58%), soy burgers or crumbles (43%) and tofu entrees (32%).

Lempert, who presented the findings from his online soy survey at the 11th Annual Soy Symposium, is one of America's leading consumer trend watchers and a regular guest on The View, Oprah, Discovery Health and Extra. The annual Soy Symposium, that brings together soy producers, marketing experts and product development specialists to discuss the future of the soyfoods market, was held in Chicago this past week.

The Soyfoods Association of North America (SANA) is a non-profit trade association that has been promoting consumption of soyfoods in the diet since 1978. SANA members include large and small soyfoods companies, growers and suppliers of soybeans, nutritionists, cookbook authors, equipment representatives, food scientists and retailers.

More statistics and information about consumer interest in soy and other vegetarian alternatives can also be found on the page for concessionaires on this site.

Veggie dogs were offered at three stands during the All Star Game at Chicago's U.S. Cellular Field (formerly Comiskey Park) this past July. The stadium began to offer veggie dogs in the outfield stand on opening day in April and discovered that they sold very well at this additional stand. In addition, San Francisco's Pacific Bell Park has been selling out of their veggie dogs on a consistent basis, according to supportive fans who have season tickets.

Unfortunately, Soy Happy continues to hear from baseball fans who were unable to find the veggie dogs at parks that offered them. What happens is that concession staff are sometimes not informed about all the foods served at their stadiums, so they cannot direct interested fans to the appropriate stands or locations. In addition, there is little if any signage throughout the stadium to help fans to find these items. Soy Happy should not be the only reference available for interested fans to find these foods. We continue to communicate with concession managers at these stadiums, encouraging them to post signs indicating where veggie dogs are sold so that interested fans can find them and thereby generate more sales to reflect true demand.

On July 13, Soy Happy hosted a group outing to an Oakland A's game at the Network Associates Coliseum. Many Soy Happy fans were in attendance and veggie dogs sold out quickly. Concession servers at the veggie dog stand say that selling out of them is not unusual. Note: Network Associates Coliseum is home to the Oakland Athletics as well as the NFL's Oakland Raiders, so Raider fans also get the benefit of choosing vegetarian alternatives at their home games.

In the back (right side) is Ron, the San Francisco hot dog cart vendor now selling soy dogs. In the middle, more Soy Happy A's fans, including SH director, Johanna.
