A great helping for turkeys this holiday season

Did you know that the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act (HMSA), which is supposed to ensure that animals are rendered insensible to pain before being slaughtered, does not cover poultry? The federal law designed to protect food animals from suffering during slaughter excludes a shocking 95% of those animals. This includes turkeys, chickens, ducks and other birds. These birds are dying horrific deaths, by the millions.

You can help to change this.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is mobilizing to get Congress to act, and they are asking for your help. Please sign their Petition for Poultry today and tell Congress to fix this law!

A variety of food establishments have utilized our liaison services. Below are a few recent examples and some testimonials.

CONVENIENCE STORES

From the field representative for seven major convenience store accounts of a national chain, in the north east:

"Increasing sales in a C-store, in todays environment can be a difficult task. Fresh Foods and Healthy foods are areas that can be improved and need to improved to survive in the future. Space is limited within our walls and I need new, exciting, alternative products that would separate my stores from the competition. I needed help to accomplish this task. I started searching on the internet and was lucky enough to find Johanna and her organization SOY HAPPY. I explained my situation to Johanna. She was very knowledgeable of products that work in C-stores and was able to offer some suggestions to increase sales. She put my information out to sources that would contact me to future test and develop Alternative, healthy products. These items range from Healthy snacks to Alternative Healthy Heat and Eat items. Johanna is very informative and gets back to me very quickly. Johanna also gets involved to help resolve any difficulty we may have along the way. She is a pleasure to work with and I look forward to developing many successful items in the future with her and SOY HAPPY!" *

HOT DOG CART VENDORS

Cart vendors all indicate that there is an increased request for vegetarian items. SH has assisted hot dog cart and restaurant vendors in California, North Carolina, New Orleans, Michigan, and Washington state.

Rocco Cacciatori of Salza Dog in the Seattle area is one example of a cart vendor that has utilized SH liaison assistance. He is now selling Lightlife Foods' Smart Dogs to his customers and continues to work with SH to create marketing ideas and to maximize sales of veggie dogs from his three locations. (See our Affiliate link to Lightlife Foods, below, for more information on this manufacturer).

Mike, who owns a couple of hot dog restaurants in central Michigan also utilized SH services and will soon offer veggie dogs to his customers.*

Brenda, in Los Angeles, is now developing a business plan for a fully vegetarian cart business there. She has received consultation from SH and is looking to be in operation by spring. *

RESTAURANTS

"I would like to express my sincere gratitude toward all the help received from Soy Happy. We are a vegetarian restaurant located in downtown Philadelphia. With our clientele predominantly vegan, I was looking at diversifying our menu into a more vegan friendly menu. My endeavor was supported greatly by Johanna. She assisted me in approaching different vegan vendors of cheese, ice cream, and other vegan products.

"Being a niche market, it is important for likeminded businesses to support each other. Today, we at Govinda's have a wide variety of vegan specialties and I would like to express my sincere gratitude toward Johanna, our Guardian Angel."

Patti Howard is the SH Manager for the Baltimore Orioles as well as the new D.C.team and stadium. If you'd like to join her in in local outings and support, please contact her!

B'more and DC SH manager with legendary Orioles first baseman Boog Powell!

From Patti:
" Baseball is finally returning to the Nation's Capital! I couldn't be happier to be representing Soy Happy here in Washington in the initial effort to make sure there are plenty of veggie options for all of us. I have been a baseball fan all my life, and was surprised to find that so many other vegan activists were too! I love that so many choices are now available to us at ballparks, largely due to the efforts of Johanna and Soy Happy.
As soon as concession contracts are in place at RFK stadium, Soy Happy will bring DC fans more information about what those options will be and where they can be found. In addition, we will organize some great veg outings where we can all show our support for our new team and enjoy some great meat-free ballpark food. In addition, lets not forget our beloved Orioles. We'll definitely plan some trips to Camden Yards to support veggie options in Baltimore too. Play Ball ! "

Starting at midnight Nov.18, deposits for full season ticket plans to D.C. games will be accepted.

Background information:

"The Montreal Expos announced they were moving to Washington, DC on September 29, 2004. The move had been in the works since the team was bought by the other 29 Major League Baseball team owners in 2002. Relocation of the Expos is subject to certain contingencies, including a vote by team owners in November and passage of legislation by the Washington's City Council to build a ballpark on the Anacostia River waterfront, south of the Capitol. It is not known what the name of the team will be, although it is not expected to remain as the Expos. The Texas Rangers own the rights to the Washington Senators name. A petition has been circulated to name the team the Washington Grays in tribute to the Homestead Grays, a Negro League team that played in Washington in the 1930s and 1940s. The team will play for three seasons at RFK Stadium while a new ballpark is built. The first home game will be April 15 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to the draft 2005 schedule that has been circulated to major league teams." [Excerpted from RFK info on ballparks.com]

Soy Happy will notify subscribers and update our Venue Reference Guide when we confirm final veg menu information for the new ballpark.
